Southbound 45
Southbound 45
Southbound 45 is a "Gruntry" musical group which was formed with a little bit of that "right place right time"magic. The band began when Santa Fe, TX native, Malissa Peek, auditioned for a rock alternative cover band composed of progressively-rooted lead guitarist Matt Gallegos and drummer Roland Orizaga. Fifteen minutes into the audition, Malissa felt as though she was wasting their time. Malissa's heart was in Country music and she knew the alternative direction would always feel foreign. She asked them to play "Hell On Heels" by Pistol Annies and the guys got their first taste of the spite fire sound. That night the trio decided to take on a new project. The progressive musicians learned to simplify their work while maintaining their passionate rocker style and the band started to find their sound. Although practicing covers was fun, the three felt it was time to dive into Malissa's original songs. The first accomplished songs, "Men Don't Like Hoes" and "Sometimes", defined the band's musical direction. From that moment, the writing process never stopped. The group found a balance and a comfortable home in Malissa's lyrics and voice and the harmonies came natural. The project introduced Fellow Santa Fe native to the group Tim Corrigan and began work as a duo with an image resembling Nashville acts such as Thompson Square and Sugarland. With changes inevitable in a new band Corrigan resigned and the band sought a new rhythm guitarist. On a karaoke night in a small town Nicholas Derden captivated Malissa's ear. He had a guitar in the truck and the rest was history. Derden infused his writing style with Malissa's and the real magic began. Bass player Derek Lann, joined the group in the early stages of the project but would eventually resign and the band again reconstructed finding new talent in ( ). SB45 has maintained the core of the band since day one and continues to build a solid foundation for a lifelong journey that is itching to take off. Southbound 45 gained speed and warns everyone to "hold on tight, this is going to be one hell of a ride!"
